The Hutto community
was first settled in 1854, it was established in 1876 with the
coming of the International and Great Northern Rail Road and the
donation of five acres of right of way by James Emory Hutto and sale
of forty-five acres to a New York land development company. In 1911
the City of Hutto was incorporated with the State of Texas as an
official governmental entity.
Located on United States Highway 79, Hutto is one of the fastest
growing small cities in America. In 1980 the City of Hutto was 545
people with in its limits, in 1990 that number was only 630, in 2000
Hutto was 1250 people, and in August 2004 the population was
calculated at 5,568 to allow the City of Hutto to go to a home rule
charter type of government. Today in May, 2006 the City of Hutto
population is approximately 14,000. This is just the population
within the city limits, within the school district there are
approximately 17,000 additional people. Growth continues to be
spurred forward by proximity to Austin, Round Rock and Pflugerville.
Within our general metro area there are many more people that live
closer to Hutto than their own communities of Pflugerville, Round
Rock and Taylor. A new State Highway 130 is pushing growth at an
aggressive level (this toll road project is the largest
transportation project currently underway in the United States) and
we expect the City of Hutto to have a population of 23,000 by the
time SH130 opens in the fall of 2007. With a healthy economy by the
census in 2010, the population of the City of Hutto will far exceed
30,000; by 2020 that number will be 75,000 and by 2030 our
population and growth area should be built out at approximately
125,000. The above numbers and statistical projections have been put
forward based on close observation and interpolation of the growth
that we are experiencing in Hutto. The demographics of growth in
Hutto also show a population younger than Texas and the area
averages.
